Root Canal

General dentistry Pasadena

root canal procedure is often dreaded by patients because of its exaggerated reputation as an overly painful procedure when in fact this is far from the truth. With modern advances in dentistry and the use of anesthesia, the procedure is relatively comfortable and exceptionally safe and effective. In fact, as one of the most common procedures we at Premier Care Dental Group perform, a root canal in Pasadena is an entirely routine procedure.

Despite its reputation, a root canal is actually intended to halt pain and sensitivity — it’s very often the cure for a severe toothache. It’s performed to prevent further degradation in a tooth and is used in conjunction with other restorative procedures, including having a dental crown installed. Most patients who get root canals recover within a few days provided they follow their post-op instructions.

Why Might a Root Canal be Needed?

Root canals typically become necessary when the soft tissue of an infected tooth becomes infected. This can cause severe pain and may impact a patient’s ability to speak and eat. As for how a tooth can get infected in the first place, it’s commonly due to less than ideal dental hygiene; however, even the most diligent tooth-brushers and flossers can fall victim to an infection. That being said, people who take good care of their teeth are much less likely to need a root canal at any point in their lives.

According to WebMD, over 95% of root canals are successful and most patients never require further treatment for the same tooth. However, patients who ignore chronic tooth pain or sensitivity are putting themselves at risk for harsher consequences—so getting an ailment checked out promptly is always in their best interests.

What Does a Root Canal Entail?

A highly focused use of a local anesthetic is employed before a hole is drilled into the tooth — most patients experience no sensation from this beyond the vibration. The soft tissue inside the tooth, otherwise known as the pulp, is then extracted. The site is thoroughly cleaned and then sealed up, usually with a crown or dental filling to prevent future infections.

After the procedure, patients may experience minor discomfort in the surrounding area, but significant discomfort should not be expected and most patients can return to their usual lives the following day. If the procedure requires two visits, patients should avoid chewing on that side of their mouth in the interim.
